Greenhough At latitude 41, Nelson is certainly a cool climate viticultural region. One of New Zealand’s sunniest regions, it regularly boasts the national high with around 2,400 sunshine hours annually. Summer temperatures are moderate ranging in the mid-to-high twenties C during the day. On the Waimea plains, a moderate sea breeze is common. Skies are typically clear throughout the growing season, causing rapid cooling of temperatures at night. This pronounced diurnal range allows an extended ripening period with gradual development of flavours and reduction of acids. Such conditions are ideal for developing strong varietal definition. Nelson sits in the rain shadow of a significant mountain range to the west. Average annual rainfall is around 980 mm. While most of this rain falls over the winter months, there is always the threat of rainfall in early March. Autumns are generally long and dry however, with harvest occurring throughout April. Greenhough produce 2 labels from the Nelson area. A regional branded ‘Nelson’ range which is produced from Hope vineyard, and nearby lease-managed and contracted fruit. These wines show brilliant regional characteristics at an astonishing price. The ‘Hope’ range is produced exclusively from the home 5 hectare block. The character of this special site has continued to impress over time. With vines as old as 30 years the soils are a gravelly, clay loam mix. While free draining, the high clay content contributes greatly to fruit weight and depth of flavour. The highly regarded Hope Vineyard Pinot Noir is the flagship, partnered by Chardonnay, and a sweeter style Riesling. These wines show concentration, structure and persistence. Power with elegance and restraint are their signature. |
